TESOL 2007My Poster SessionTeaman, B.D. Speaking tests and practice through your browser. TESOL 2007. Seattle, Washington, USA. Mar. 21-24, 2007. Abstract (Used for vetting)This poster will show the The Machine-Aided Spoken Language Evaluation (MASLE) system. It is a web-based system which can deliver speaking tests or practice over any standard browser. The system allows the teacher or tester to easily create a web-based test or practice which is based on prompts ranging from words to sentences to audio, images or videos. After the test or practice is created, the teacher can then allow students to record speech based on the prompts designed by the teacher. For example, students will see a series of text prompts and read each one. Tests can then be easily graded by the teacher or optionally sent to a speech recognition program to be graded automatically. The poster will include sample screen-shots and show the types of tests/practices that can be created. The kinds of speech data that can be machine-graded will also be described. This system can be used for simple pronunciation practice, or more open-ended tests which would involve describing an image or video, or answering a question. Spoken responses can range from short utterances to longer monologues of a minute or more. Some data will be presented showing the inter-rater reliability between human and machine graders.
