My system for writing notes on student papers:
| Abbreviation | Full Form | Explanation |
| rw | rewrite | A phrase is not clear either because of word order sometimes multiple errors and needs to be rewritten |
| agr. | agreement | There is an agreement problem that needs to be fixed |
| wf | wrong form | The word is OK, but the wrong form is used and so needs to be changed |
| vf | verb form | The verb is written incorrectly. |
| vt | verb tense | Incorrect verb tense |
| sp | spelling | A word is spelled incorrectly |
| wo | word order | Words are generally correct but the sentence is in the wrong order, sometimes like Japanese |
| ? | don't understand | The part that is underlined or circled is difficult or impossible to understand and needs to be rewritten |
| wc, ww | word choice | Wrong word has been chosen, though the meaning might be similar a better word must be used here |
| cc | combine sentences | Two sentences can be combined into one often in the case where "as," "but," or "so" are used on the second sentence |
| || | parallel | Parallel structure needs to be used |
| art. | article | Mistake in "the," "a," or "an." |
| obj. | needs object of verb | A verb that requires an object has none, so it needs to be added |
| trans. | transition | A transition is missing or used incorrectly. |
| sf | sentence fragment | It is not a complete sentence. Usually a verb is missing. |
| ds or DS | double space |
| ref. | reference | not clear what a pronoun is referring to |
