INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Subdivisions:

International Communications Phonetics

Questions:

What can we reasonably expect our students are preparing for? Like what are the job ranges...working in the office of an eikaiwa? as eikaiwa teachers...what kind of translation jobs can they look for? Can they become high school teachers or do they need another qualification?

Some potential career tracks:

  1. Translator
  2. JICA/overseas NGO
  3. Graduate studies in TESOL or other
  4. Flight attendent/Tourism
  5. Office work or companies using English
  6. Teaching English to adults
  7. Teaching English to children
  8. Developing curriculum

What courses should we group together when counseling students?

Some courses that would be in a language education program are missing from our program...like second language acquisition...should we see how we might divide some of the content and cover it in other classes that do exist? Can we add such a class in 2008-2009 after our initial four years are up?

How broad or focused do we want courses? For Curriculum development I can go into some of the great thinkers about CD like Dewey Tyler, Taba, etc...or I can skip that and deal with curriculum development for an entire program/school or I can really focus on developing a syllabus in one class...or a combination of all the above (but it would be good to hear from others their ideas and share then as all the courses could be broad or narrow depending on our approach).

If students want to go to graduate school, how should we advise them...what would make good foundation courses for someone who wants to teach ESL/EFL and will go to study for an MA or MAT
