The goal of this study is to propose a quantitative measure of fluency in conversations. There have been several studies on fluency and speech rate for monologues but conversations have not received much attention. Measuring speech rate is one component of second language speech and therefore knowledge of this measure can contribute to an effective understanding of speaking especially in computer assessment. Brief conversations of 11 pairs of Japanese college students were recorded and durations measured. Various ways of calculating the durations were performed. These durations were then compared with a proficiency measure in order to get a rough estimate of the relationship between speech rate and proficiency. Results showed that some measures seemed comparable to similar measures proposed for monologues. Furthermore it was found that some measures seemed to correlate well to speaking ability.
