Meeting Results

We decided on the following tasks:

  • Mock up an iPod curriculum for Language/Linguistics for possible publishing (Brian)
    • Two other people were considering work on the other two concentrations in our curriculum (Steve C. and Jerrod I believe)
  • Teach the iPod to Topic Studies III students (Brian or Jerrod, need to confirm this with Eiko).
  • Check out available free materials for listening (Brian and Jerrod)
  • There is more check with Eiko.

The following page was something I printed up for use at the meeting.

Page for my thoughts in iPod usage at Osaka Jogakuin.

  1. The more the materials available, the better. Some possible sources:
    • Recording of classroom materials.
      • Texts: there are plenty of texts in Integrated reading and writing that can be recorded. This will allow students to review work AND get listening practice at the same time.
      • Recordings of 2nd year listening class. (Topic Studies 3)
        • We made some samples. What is the current state of this?
    • Recording of public domain (PD) texts.
      • finding good texts takes time, but they are out there.
      • revising PD texts might be a solution to the problem.
      • I found a sample from a PD source and will make it available for download at http://popear.org/listening
    • Free texts produced by Audible
    • We need to find a format in use for tagging Mp3 files.

  2. iPod support is needed.
    • Is there a "Hints and tips" on using the iPod available on the Wilmina Website?
    • Here are some of my suggestions for iPod hints and tips
      • How to use the iPod. Useful features such as sleep timer, alarm clock, additional hardware available to make it into a stereo for listening at home.
      • Use of headphones
        • Safety and health issues related to using headphones. Be careful not to play the music too loud. Be careful where you use headphones (for example, one should use common sense and extra care when using headphones in dangerous places.

  3. We need to begin making stuff available on the internet. It will be great public relations, especially if we can put on good materials that will be of use to High School students.
    • The idea of going to ALC connects well with this..

After Meeting Thoughts

My duties: Put together the ALC project for Linguistics/Language Learning.

What I want to do: I say we reconsider whether or not ALC is the way to go.

Ask Peter if he'll donate a song.

Find other ways to get good free music.
