Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Viewed on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 in Minoo, Osaka, Japan. I'll give it a four out of my five thumbs.

I liked it. Baliwood/midget stage shows. Fun realities... Johnny Depp is a gas. Why does he call Cocoa or Cacao "Coca"? Hmm, sounds like druggie inuendo. Sit back, fire up a doob and enjoy. Protagonist does not become the richest man in the world but stays with his family and they live happily ever after. How touching, but a nice twist from the usual formula. Finally, he hangs out with Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) a quirky, needy, yet lovable middle aged man. Fortunately more lovable and less problematic than Michael Jackson, but they do have have their similarities.

Interesting review from a 'family' perspective here. He missed all the controlled substances inuendo. Obviously this guy never fired up. He actually thought it was a good wholesome film. I agree, but for not quite the same reasons. He says the woman sipping from the large martini glass is drinking alcohol, but how does he know what is in the glass?

Postscript: Inspired by this movie, I went back and watched the original, remembering that I enjoyed the movie way back around the first time it came out, though I bet I only saw it on television because I can probably count on two hands the movies I saw in a theater before I was 18. What a disappointment. Quirky at it's best but mostly just B grade. There was one exception to this pan: Willy Wonka, played by Gene Wilder was simply a joy to watch.
