February 12, 2010 Ride from school to home

4 degrees C (40 degrees F) party cloudy, dry, a few puddles from yesterday, strong wind and gusts from the North (I was headed north) of about 10-15kph. Kmart helmet, goldwin skull cap. Gore top, capilene medium weight long sleeve insulation layer. Descente Wombat gloves with mits engaged. Nailini bibs. Cabelas fuzzy wool blend socks. Sidi winter shoes. Descente heavy shoe covers. Comfortable except feet, especially toes. I think if I had my thinner wool socks, it would have been better. With these heavier socks, my toes were too tightly covered allowing for little warm air. Also my shoe covers were damp from two days before.

Lesson: thinner good socks are better. Return trips are often colder than the morning, don't be led astray by unseasonally warm mornings.

February 11, 2010 Ride to Silbest Toyonaka and back

6 degrees C (44 degrees F) heavy overcast, Rain #5, Standing water in places but not everywhere. Kmart helmet, Pearl Izumi Raincap with clear visor (under helmet) and pearl izumi helmet cover (over helmet). Cotton t-shirt and flannel shirt (it was just a local trip so I only needed some insulation under the raincoat. Showers pass rain coat. underwear, long underwear, cycling shorts, illuminite rain pants. socks, old sidi shoes, pearl izumi toe covers. pearl izumi cyclone gloves

Lesson: Pearl izumi cyclone gloves were not made for rain, Raincap with clear visor is fabulous. Love it. Rain gear gives odd sensations of acculated sweat and chills but with the current gear it was quite comfortable. You just have to get used to the new sensation you are feeling.

  1. Misting (you dry naturally before you can get too wet)
  2. very light rain
  3. constant rain but you could ride for 10 minutes without being soaked
  4. constant rain
  5. getting heavy
  6. Quite heavy but you can slog through
  7. Very heavy but for moments you think it could be worse
  8. Downpour (In a car, the wipers can't quite keep up so you slow down or pull over/without any gear you are soaked through to the bone in less than 10 seconds.
